Born in Galway, he holds a BA (History and English) degree from UCG (now NUIG), a Masters in Business Administration from UCD and a Diploma in Applied Finance from IMI. He served as President of USI before joining Rehab as Executive Assistant to the General Manager in 1973, became General Manager in 1978 and Chief Executive in 1981. He retired as Group Chief Executive in 2006. He maintained a relationship with the Group in a consultancy capacity until 2013, mainly as International Representative. He has a long-lasting relationship with Fine Gael generally as a provider of informal strategic advice. This involvement was most intense from 1980 to 1987 and from 2002 to 2013. He served as Director of Elections at national level on a number of occasions.
