Columnist, lecturer and film-maker, his recent work is the documentary In The Name Of Peace: John Hume in America. He wrote and co-produced The Boys of St. Columb’s, an RTÉ/BBC documentary film and the book of the same name. He has directed a documentary film for the BBC about Brian Friel’s Translations. A recipient of the Ministry of Education of Japan scholarship, he lived in Tokyo from 2004-2011, lecturing at Keio University. He writes travel journalism, has interviewed many writers on their work, and is a syndicated columnist, writing mainly on Irish affairs.
