Claire has been MLA for South Belfast since 2015 and is SDLP Spokesperson on Brexit and Finance. She chairs All Party Assembly groups on International Development and the Arts & Creative Industries. A Belfast City Councillor from 2011-2015, she brought motions making Belfast Ireland’s first Living Wage council, banning the imposition of Zero Hour Contracts on Council staff, changing procurement policy to allow for the exclusion of companies involved in tax evasion, and to award the Freedom of Belfast to poet Michael Longley. She worked for the development agency Concern Worldwide for 10 years including in Haiti, Bangladesh and Zambia. She is a graduate of the Open University and Queen’s Belfast with a Masters in Law in 2015.
